Stylists Trained in How to Spot Skin Cancer

DermOne Dermatology Centers has teamed up with the TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy in Plano and Keller, Texas on an educational initiative to help the community recognize potential skin cancer sooner. With the tens of thousands of heads and necks that TONI&GUY stylists lay hands on each year, these stylists stand in one of the best positions to help positively change lives.

On June 8, skin experts from DermOne Dermatology Centers presented a special training session at the Plano TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy to kick off this new partnership. TONI&GUY stylists, educators and directors from across Dallas attended this educational session, which covered the "ABCDEs" of skin cancer and what to look for on a client's scalp, head and neck.

The fact is that one person dies from melanoma every 57 minutes.  Getting regular skin checks and catching cancerous spots sooner gives people a better chance for survival. Melanoma on the head and neck accounts for 10 percent of all skin cancer deaths, and with many spots lying beneath hair or on the back of the head or neck, it's many times the eagle eye of a stylist who can find the potentially dangerous spot even before a client finds it for himself or herself. More than one in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime -- and everyone needs a good haircut.

TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy regularly conducts ongoing education to both students and working professionals in the beauty industry.  Offering basic and advanced cosmetology training, the beauty school's curriculum is rooted in TONI&GUY's trademark approach of continuously updating cutting, colouring, and styling techniques.

In addition to talking about skin cancer, Dr. Carolyn Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with DermOne Dermatology Centers who conducted the training, also discussed other skin-related topics, such as psoriasis and eczema, conditions that can be very debilitating and have a great impact on a person's daily life. By learning more about these conditions, stylists can help their clients get the expertise they need to get treatment and have the healthiest skin possible.
