My philosophy on doing hair is to always

maintain the health and integrity of the hair. My

philosophy on business is to get good at building

relationships.

elationships are the key to a prosperous life

and business

. They drive the business side of what

we do. We wouldn’t be able to grow and enjoy the

creative side without nourishing the business side,

and that means we all need to be in the business

of building and maintaining solid relationships.

The more people you know, and the more

people who know about you, the better off you

are. This means more referrals, more trust and

more business in general. Fortunately, the beauty

industry presents endless opportunities to meet

new people and develop relationship skills. There

is always someone new in a salon, at classes and at

social events. The more you put yourself out there

and try new things, the more people you will meet

— all of whom can become potential clients.

Never burn bridges. Creative careers can

breed drama, but it’s important to always keep

your cool — even take a hit when necessary. If

you are facing a disgruntled co-worker or client,

do your best to make them feel better — or at

the very least, not make them feel worse. It’s a

small world; you never know who’s connected,

and most people will remember and appreciate

you for choosing kindness in the end.

Network, network, network. I feel as if I could

write a novel on this topic. In order to truly grow

your business, you have to find ways to attract

more attention to yourself. It’s not necessary

to don a tutu and become an Instagram star

(although that could help), but it is necessary to

network. You just have to get into the spirit and
