"This was truly a team effort,” exclaimed Sonia Rodriguez, when she was told she was the winner of the 2009 Texas Stylist Cover Contest. “I think if one element was not in place, I don’t think we would have won. Everything came together so beautifully.”
“When doing a project like this,” Rodriguez noted, “I find it best to let everyone do what they are best at.” Rodriguez did the hair and color while Wendy Bajzer-Ellis was in charge of the makeup and photographer Jonathan Alonzo handled all of the photo shoot setup.
“We all collaborated and had some input, but we are all artists in our own right,” she said.
Model, Alyssa Kerbow was chosen for a fashion show project the Got Hair? Salon team was already working on. When Rodriguez asked the model if she was willing to go red and the answer was yes, she knew she could rock out the color and cut and get a winning shot.
When asked about the vision for the shot Rodriguez explained, “All I knew was I wanted to make an awesome redhead. The cut was inspired by the wind. If you saw just the cut, it would look like there was a fan on one side of her following her around. I just knew I wanted to capture the color and see lots of action in the color.”
Rodriguez has been doing hair for 11 years, working in an Aveda salon for nine of those years. Now working in Got Hair? Salon in San Antonio, she has time to really focus on what she loves to do: photo shoots, fashion shows, and makeovers for charities.
“My specialty would be corrective color and dry cutting – I would never be able to do only one thing,” she exclaimed. “I love creating the whole package. It truly is like creating a piece of art.”
Got Hair? Salon, is one of San Antonio’s hidden treasures. “Our salon is quaint and almost hidden,” Rodriguez said. “Our main focus is attention to detail and customer service, after all, where would we be without them?”
“This couldn’t have been an easier challenge in the sense that the sky was the limit. We could do whatever we wanted; we had so much fun working together and have already made plans for some future projects,” she exclaimed.
When asked what advice she would give other stylists interested in entering the cover contest Rodriguez remarked: “I would tell other stylists to just go for it. When I submitted this entry, I figured even if I don’t win, I stepped out of my box. And that’s what it is all about when you are an artist.
Congratulations to Sonia Rodriguez and the Got Hair? Salon team for an incredible shot.
