Jena Wright is no novice to the California Stylist cover contest. Nine years ago as a 16 year old, she was the model for the winning cover entry submitted by Brig Van Osten.
Now as the manager of p!ay hair lounge, owned by Van Osten, Jena is the stylist that submitted the 2009 winning cover shot.
Wright has only been behind the chair for three years, but has been “doing” hair her whole life. She specializes in creating beautiful hair. Her artistic vision helped to create the winning cover shot, however, the photo shoot was a team effort.
Brig Van Osten, p!ay owner, coordinated and directed the shoot while Wright set and styled model Taylor Bellefontaine’s hair. Fellow p!ay stylists, Alaina Manibog did her makeup and Sam Berkan were also on set to assist.
Van Osten, along with photographer, Todd Jones organized the locations, car and theme/concept. “The vision for the photo shoot was very young Hollywood,” noted Wright. “The shoot took place at a nearby park and we shot inside an old Oldsmobile Cutlass. It was really cool.”
Wright entered the cover contest in 2008 and received an honorable mention. “I was so excited about that,” exclaimed Wright. “Now I am just blown away! Nine years ago Brig, my hair mentor, won the cover contest using me as her hair model, and now I have won as a stylist! Its such an honor, and truly a win for our whole p!ay team.”
For the past 13 years in the beauty industry, Brig Van Osten has educated herself on every aspect of owning a successful salon. In 2006 she invested her refreshingly unusual vision into p!ay hair lounge. Just 30 minutes northwest of Los Angeles in Simi Valley, p!ay hair lounge rivals the most upscale urban salon and offers an energetic change in Ventura County.
The modern, retro inspired space is beautifully lit and has an inviting atmosphere that welcomes everyone. Red styling chairs encompass the perimeter walls while the entire center is the heart of p!ay, a lounge for clients including Bumble & bumble retail products.
As a Bumble & bumble exclusive salon, the team unites during monthly educational events as well as attends advanced courses at Bb University in New York. Photo shoots, music videos and runway shows are an often occurrence for the stylists of p!ay as they extend their craft beyond the chair.
When asked why Wright thought her entry was the winning shot she remarked, “I think we won because we worked well together to accomplish a beautiful look and we rocked it!”
