Very few continuing education (CE) courses that are conducted outside of Ohio are approved for use in satisfying your CE hour requirement. There are over 1,000 classes approved for CE, of these fewer than twenty (20) are out-of-state.
If you are planning on taking a continuing education class out-of-state it is important to do your research first. Ask the provider of the class if they have obtained an approval number for the class from the State of Ohio. Being in the “process” of approval or submitting for approval after the class is given is not acceptable. However, if the answer is yes, make sure you sign-in when entering the class with your name and Ohio Board ID number. And lastly, be sure you do not leave the class without your certificate of completion. The certificate should contain the following information:
If taking a class of-of-state is something you want to do, keep in mind it is your responsibility to follow the guidelines mentioned above. And remember to ask “Is this an approved CE class.”
If you have any questions regarding approved CE classes feel free to contact the Board office:
The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology is preparing to kick-off the 2013 renewal season on September 1.
Watch your mail…
In August the Board will begin mailing out renewal information to all licensees. This information will come in the form of a mailer titled “Important Renewal Information Enclosed.” The mailer will contain the licensee’s username and password as well as information on the renewal website, hotline and renewal instructions.
With renewal season fast approaching take a minute to make certain the Board has your correct address information. If you moved and did not notify the Board directly with your change of address use one of the options listed below to update your information. Submitting a change of address form to the United States Postal Service (USPS) will only stay in place approximately 30-60 days and the USPS never notifies the Board of these changes. After that period, most mail is returned to sender. Many licensees learned this the hard way during the last renewal when they did not receive their renewal information or even their license.
There are many ways to update your address with the Board, choose one that works best for you.
• Visit us online (user name and password required) https://license.ohio.gov
• Fax: 614-644-6880 or Email: ohiocosbd@cos.state.oh.us
Be sure to include the following:
• Call (614) 466-3834 and speak to a customer services representative.
Ask yourself these questions…
Where can I find my User Name and Password?
This information can be found on the attachment portion of your 2011 license. It also can be found in the mailer sent out via mail in August. If you still cannot locate, call the Board office at 614-466-3834 and speak to a customer service representative. Once you retrieve your login information retain in your records for future use.
Did I complete the continuing education (CE) required for my license renewal?
Remember there are eight (8) hours of CE required per license. This means if you hold more than one license 8 hours are required for each.
Do I have the “certificate(s) of completion” from the CE classes taken?
It is the responsibility of the licensee to retain “certificates of completion” from all CE classes taken. Be sure to locate certificates and check to see that they equal the appropriate amount of hours. If you cannot locate your certificates, contact the provider where you took the class for a replacement. The provider does not send certificates to the Board therefore; the Board will not have this information.
Am I a first time licensee? Do I need CE?
If this is your first renewal since receiving a license, you are exempt from the CE requirement. Basically, no CE will be required for this renewal. You will simply need to go online and pay the renewal fee. Remember, eight (8) hours of CE will be required for each renewal period to come.
Am I sixty-five (65) years or older?
If you turned 65 years of age prior to January 31, 2011 you are exempt from the CE credit hour requirement.
Do I need to complete CE for an Independent Contractors (IC) license?
No, continuing education is not required for renewal of an IC license.
Do I have an Instructors license?
If you hold an instructors license be aware that the CE requirement is eight (8) hours of “Instructor Only” continuing education classes. These classes must have a curriculum on the subject of teaching and cannot be in combination with another scope of practice class.
If my license is in “Escrow” what do I need to do at renewal?
If you have an Escrowed license completion of CE hours is not required for renewal. However, in order to keep a license in good standing, it is required to pay the renewal fee each period. Continuing Education hours will only be required when returning a license to an ACTIVE status.

One year ago my office launched a new program to help small businesses and nonprofits recover money lost to deceptive business practices and scammers. So far we have been able to help more than 1,250 Ohio small businesses recover or save more than $115,000.
Most small businesses have 20 or fewer employees and lack the resources to hire legal help to take action against a person or business that has mistreated them. For more than 35 years, the Attorney General’s Office has helped consumers protect themselves from businesses or individuals who try to exploit them, and we now can do the same thing for small businesses.
Here are examples of what we have seen:
• A Trotwood trucking company arranged to buy a truck from a Texas company for $8,250. But nearly two months later, the truck still hadn't been delivered as the supplier had promised. An Attorney General's Office complaint specialist spoke with the seller and nine days later the business owner received the title and arranged for the truck's delivery.
• When an employee of a natural products shop in Central Ohio confirmed the store's address for a caller, she unknowingly opened the door to a phone directory advertising dispute. The Attorney General's Office intervened, and the New York company that billed the business $499 agreed to resolve the complaint.
• A library staff member in Madison County turned to the Ohio Attorney General's Office for help when she discovered the library's phone bill included $279.60 in unauthorized charges. A complaint specialist contacted the company that tacked on the fees, which were for an allegedly free Web service trial offer the library didn't cancel. The library disputed the allegation, and the firm credited the library's phone bill.
If you think your business has been targeted, file a complaint with my office at www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/Complaint.
The top complaints we have seen that you should be aware of include:
If your small business or you, as a consumer, have experienced unfair practices such as a scam, deceptive advertising, shoddy workmanship, a billing dispute, unauthorized charges or any illegal conduct, please contact my office at (800) 282-0515 or by visiting www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/Complaint.
