You may have seen the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) information booth at hair shows and wondered: “What are they doing here? What purpose does a government agency serve at an industry event?”
Staff from TDLR’s Compliance, Licensing and the Education and Examination divisions attend shows to better serve barbers and cosmetologists. Our expert staff are available on-site to answer continuing education inquiries, assist you with license or license renewal questions and to help explain the Texas Barbering and Cosmetology Laws and Rules. If you need a copy of the Barbering or Cosmetology book the TDLR booth has that available too.
TDLR staff make every effort to attend as many industry shows, conventions and association events as possible and plan on being present at these events in 2010:
If you are aware of a barbering or cosmetology show that we don’t have on our schedule, send the information to barbers@license.state.tx.us or cosmetologists@license.state.tx.us. TDLR’s outreach program is important to the agency’s new vision: To be the nation’s premier state agency, an example for others to follow. A part of that vision is helping you stay on top of your industry and together we’ll be the nation’s best.
For many Texans summertime signals the scheduling of regular manicures and pedicures. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation wants to remind licensees performing manicures and pedicures that a clean shop not only protects your customers from infection but keeps your shop’s reputation “spotless.”
Rules require that all non-porous manicure and pedicure implements be cleaned, disinfected and sterilized prior to each service. In addition, you should always:
• Make sure all licenses and permits are current.
• Throw away single use/disposable implements after using them. (examples: cotton balls, orangewood sticks, buffer blocks, nail wipes, disposable towels)
• Take a look around your salon and make sure it is clean, free of trash and set up with clean instruments.
• Store implements in closed tray and sterilize implements between customers.
• Clean, disinfect and sterilize metal pushers and files, cuticle nippers and scissors, tweezers, finger and toe nail clippers and electric drill bits using an autoclave or dry heat sterilizer.
• Replace the following materials used for every customer’s manicure and pedicure: terry cloth towels, finger bowls and spatulas that contact skin or skin products from multi-use containers.
• Keep the foot spa cleaning log up-to-date.
• Lastly, NEVER USE A CREDO BLADE!
These are only a few things to remember as we approach summer. We encourage you to review the laws and rules so you can apply them all year long. For information or questions concerning the Texas barbering and cosmetology laws and rules please email: barbers@license.state.tx.us or cosmetologists@license.state.tx.us. Don’t have a computer? TDLR’s Customer Service is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. We are always happy to take your call: 1-800-803-9202.
