As a participant of the Pierce County’s Antibiotic Resistance Task Force Program, Susan Colard, Assistant Administrator, is working with a wide variety of members that include representation from Medical Communities, Infection Control Practitioners, Public Health Workers, Microbiologists, Dept of Health, University of Washington and Washington State University. The goal of this group is to work together through the various agencies and programs to reduce the occurrence and impact of antibiotic resistant pathogens in Washington State.

The most recent project was a publication for consumers regarding nail salons which Susan agreed to write. Several members of the task force worked with three major medical networks who agreed to publish the article in their health magazines for consumers. The networks who are participating are:

Group Health Cooperative: a consumer-governed, nonprofit health care system that serve more than half a million residents of Washington State and Idaho.
Franciscan Health System: a health care organization that includes medical facilities in Pierce, King and Kitsap counties.
MultiCare: the area’s largest provider of health care services, serving patients at 93 locations in Pierce, South King, Kitsap and Thurston counties.

2009 Advisory Board Meeting Schedule

We will be conducting workshops directly after the Advisory Board meetings and all day long on the workshop dates. The workshops are for the re-write of the current law, RCW 18.16: The Law Relating to Barber, Cosmetologist, Manicuring and Esthetics.

Everyone is invited to attend and join us as we work through this arduous task. This is an opportunity to be a part of the law making process and have a voice in the regulation of your industry.

Cosmetology, Manicuring, Barber and Esthetics Advisory Board News

Are You or Someone You Know Interested In Serving on the Advisory Board?

The Cosmetology, Barbering, Esthetics, and Manicuring Advisory Board is currently recruiting for 1 public member, 1 esthetician representative, 1 manicurist representative, 1 private school representative, and 1 public vocational technical school representative.

Qualifications:

Public Member: Must be a consumer who is unaffiliated with the cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, or manicuring industries.
Esthetician: Currently practicing licensee who has been engaged in the practice of esthetics for at least three years.
Manicurist: Currently practicing licensee who has been engaged in the practice of manicuring for at least three years.
Private School Representative: Must be affiliated with a licensed private school of cosmetology, barbering, manicuring and esthetics.
Public Vocational Technical School Representative: Must be affiliated with a licensed public vocational technical school of cosmetology, barbering, manicuring and esthetics.

How to apply:

Mail a résumé and a completed Cosmetology Board Appointment Application, (found at http://www.dol.wa.gov/business/cosmetology/630057cos.pdf) to the address on the form. This recruitment will be open until May 15th, 2009.

Duties and responsibilities:

Attend board meetings every other month. Workshops to rewrite laws are held on the months with no board meetings.
Complete a 3-year term.
Interpret community opinions, attitudes, and needs to agencies, the Legislature, and the Governor.
Study programs and services, and analyze problems and needs.
Offer new proposals and recommend changes in programs, policies and standards.
Provide the public with information and interpretation of department and state policies, programs and budgets.
Serve as an advisor on policy matters to the appointing authority responsible for administering policy.
Study existing policy and make recommendations for change.

Health & Safety Tip:

Be sure to check all of the equipment that you use, especially esthetics, to ensure that they have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. You can find the information on the back of the equipment usually or call the manufacturer. Inspectors will be asking for this information when they are in your salons, so be prepared!
