We receive numerous inquiries as to how to become a Member of the Board of Cosmetology. There has been some confusion as to the selection process as requests have been made to the Executive Director of the Board. It is the Governor’s responsibility to appoint members of numerous boards and commissions around the state. Therefore, this authority does not rest with the Executive Director of the Board.
Should you be interested in seeking an appointment to the Board, you should contact the Office of the Governor. To facilitate a request for consideration, the following link provides an on-line application: www.governor.ohio.gov. Once the application is completed, then it should be sent via mail to the Governor’s Office, Attention: Rich Bartolomei, Boards and Commissions, 77 South High Street, 30th Floor, Riffe Center, Columbus, Ohio 43215. If you have difficulty obtaining the application, please contact the Board office and someone will be happy to assist you.

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray is teaming up with the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology this month to restart Cut It Out in Ohio. The national program certifies salon professionals across the country to identify key indicators and effectively respond to clients when domestic violence is suspected. Salons are designated as safe places for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault where they can receive resources for help.
Cordray wants to expand the program to include information about sexual violence because too few people report being sexually assaulted. According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), one in six women and one in 33 men will be a victim of sexual assault in their lifetimes. RAINN estimates that 60 percent of sexual assaults are not reported to the police and in many cases is a result of an abusive relationship.
Many battered women never call the police or go to a shelter out of fear and feelings of embarrassment and the stigma attached to being abused. However, research shows that they do usually talk about the abuse with someone they trust. Because salon professionals are skilled and experienced listeners who are personally interested in their clients, many women suffering from abuse feel comfortable confiding in them.
Recognizing the exclusive relationship between salon professionals and clients, Cordray is encouraging Ohio stylists to attend the Cut It Out program so they can be an ally to their customers and viewed as a community resource for domestic violence.
“Often, one of the only places a victim of domestic violence is permitted to visit alone on a regular basis is their salon,” said Cordray. “Salon professionals are in the unique position of not only being able to recognize the physical signs of abuse, but they may be able to identify the emotional symptoms as well. Providing salon professionals the resources to take action only makes sense.”
Cut It Out began in Alabama in 2001; since then, the program has expanded to all 50 states and Australia. To date, more than 40,000 salon professionals have been educated by Cut It Out. The program certifies stylists through two-hour seminars offered by the Attorney General’s Office. The seminars focus on how to identify signs of domestic violence and help the victim.
In Ohio, trainings are scheduled for April and May in Columbus, Cleveland and Twinsburg, with more to be added. CLE credits are available through this program.

The 2009 Continuing Education (CE) Audit is well on its way at the State Board of Cosmetology. The audit letters were mailed to randomly selected licensees beginning March 16, 2009. Many have already sent information into our office or contacted the CE office for further information on how to comply. Please remember, you only have until April 16th to fulfill your obligation of providing certificates by mail, fax or e-mail.
If you do not have a copy of your CE certificate, please contact the provider. The Board does not have certificates; the board only has the sign in sheets the providers have mailed to the board.
You will be notified by mail only if you do not comply with the audit. Failure to comply with the audit will result in possible fines and/or suspension of your license. The board has already received audits that have failed. Make sure that you have used all resources available to obtain your CE certificate. Not having the required hours, no matter what the issue, will result in a failed audit.
The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology will require that all providers supply CE certificate(s) to all licensees that will take their class. If not, providers will potentially lose their privilege of being a provider of classes for the current licensing period.
If you have any questions, call the audit department where Sandra Lee and Larie McKenney can assist you at 614-728-8196.
