Recently we have received numerous inquiries as to how to become a Member of the Board of Cosmetology. There has been some confusion as to the selection process as requests have been made to the Executive Director of the Board. It is the Governor’s responsibility to appoint members of numerous boards and commissions around the state. Therefore, this authority does not rest with the Executive Director of the Board.
Should you be interested in seeking an appointment to the Board, you should contact the Office of the Governor. To facilitate a request for consideration, the following link provides an on-line application: www.governor.ohio.gov. Once the application is completed, then it should be sent via mail to the Governor’s Office, Attention: Rich Bartolomei, Boards and Commissions, 77 South High Street, 30th Floor, Riffe Center, Columbus, Ohio 43215. If you have difficulty obtaining the application, please contact the Board office and someone will be happy to assist you.

As part of the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology’s commitment to customer service and innovation, new things are being implemented. An early renewal opportunity will become available August 1, 2008. The only catch is it MUST be done online. How can you take advantage of this opportunity? Here’s how:
• First, realize this program will not begin until August 1st.
• Next, look on the back of your current 2009 license and locate your User ID and Password. You will need this information to renew.
• Next, visit www.license.ohio.gov
• Enter the required information to order your license (MasterCard, Visa, Discover or Debit cards can be used).
Once the transaction is complete, be sure to keep all records in case you need to question your financial institution regarding payment. The Board office will not have access to your financial information.
• All Individual licenses - $45.00
• Independent Contractor - $60.00
By renewing in August you will receive your 2011 License and avoid the hassle of waiting until the end of the year when the holiday season is upon us (plus you get up to five months of licensure for the same price). Be sure to complete your required CE and keep copies of your certificates. Remember you do not have to list courses; you will need to check the appropriate box to show you have fulfilled the requirements. An audit will follow early next year to ensure your compliance at the time of renewal.
The Board will once again have a renewal hotline to assist you with any questions you may have. A reminder mailer will be sent to all licensees in July detailing how this program will proceed and how you can take advantage of it. Businesses will also be sent a separate mailing to explain how they can renew on-line as well. Those who do not wish to take advantage of this opportunity will receive a renewal application in the mail beginning in October. The Board is moving forward incrementally with this implementation as the next step will be complete on-line renewal for the 2013.
Look for more information in forthcoming issues of the Ohio Stylist and visit our web site often at: www.cos.ohio.gov.
Your Correct Personal Information?
Most forwarding orders expire after 30 days
Many licensees across the state get married or move to a different location. Did you remember to contact the Board offices to let us know? Do not rely on submitting a change of address to the post office. Depending on the location, some post offices only forward your mail for 30-60 days. After this time period, most mail is returned to sender. Many licensees learned this the hard way during the last renewal when they did not receive their renewal application or their license. Many licensees had to pay late fees due to forgetting this simple task.
Please remember to contact the Board offices by fax or e-mail at: Fax - (614) 644-6880 or via e-mail at: ohiocosbd@cos.state.oh.us. This is more important than ever with the upcoming renewal period. It’s simple, and takes just a few moments to send us your updated information by fax or e-mail.
The following list identifies the projected dates on which the Board of Cosmetology will meet. All meetings are held in the new facility’s Board room at 1929 Gateway Circle, Grove City, Ohio unless otherwise noted.
